Mythbusters Moose vs Speeding Car

The final myth from the Mythbusters Alaska Special  involved the team tackling what to do if you were ever confronted by a moose while driving in Alaska. If you recall, the other 2 myths in the episode dealt with cabin fever and the dynamite dog.
So we have Grant, Kari and Tory taking on this assignment and the question that we are asking for this myth is is this: Is it safer to speed up or attempt to stop, when out of nowhere in Alaska, a moose steps out in front of your speeding car?
To test the myth or question, however …read more

Mythbusters Cabin Fever

Mythbusters Cabin Fever

During the Mythbusters Alaska Week special they not only took on the Dynamite Dog myth but they also tried to determine if cabin fever really existed. For this testing phase, Adam and Jaimie were locked in separate cabins in remote Alaska locations, with nothing but the four walls. They do this for an entire 48 hours.
During the process Kari monitors both men with cameras from her own cabin. Its evident that they are both beginning to get bored. Adam starts making toys out of hangers and the genius that is Jaimie begins to re-write the United States Constitution. WOW!!! That …read more

Mythbusters Dynamite Dog

On the most recent episode of Mythbusters they took on Alaska and tried to debunk a series of myths for Alaska Week. The episode, as always, featured 3 myths that surround the state of Alaska. The first myth on deck was the dynamite dog experiment. Adam and Jaimie were tasked to explain to us the myth about the Alaskan fisherman who was basically too lazy to ice fish the traditional way and decided to use a stick of dynamite to blast through the ice.
Well, lo and behold, he has a genius of a Golden Retriever dog, who does what all …read more

Mythbusters – Alaska Special

Who would the Mythbusters be if they didn’t have their hand in Discovery Channel’s Alaska Week Special episodes. Well they did it again but this time to a level that I never thought they would take it. This episode features a dog, a moose and some sleep deprived guinea pigs.
Myth 1: Dynamite Dog
Adam and Jaime are tasked to test the myth about the fisherman who decided to blast through the ice of Alaska using dynamite. He of course forgets about his dog, a golden retriever, who fetches back the dynamite.
Myth 2: Moose steps out in front of a speeding car
Grant, …read more

Son of a Crab Fisherman

Son of a Crab Fisherman

This portion of The Deadliest Catch was a little sappy. It showcases Scottie Hillstrand and his father. The reminisces about growing up on the boat and having a trial period to see if he’s going to actually make it on the boat.
Scott talks about how is grandfather began fishing back in the 1970s. Its great though to see the tradition that has kept this family going for generations and will probably keep them for generations to come.
Watch the video as Scott and his father speak about the family business.

How Stuff Works – Alaska Week 2008

I thought this was something very cool that the guys over at How Stuff Works were doing on their website. They have an entire page and series of articles that go in conjuctin with Discovery Channel’s Alaska Week. They have a bunch of mini articles and links to things such as “how the Bermuda triangle works”, “how polar bears work” and even “how glaciers work”.

Dirty Jobs – Floating Fish Factory

Dirty Jobs – Floating Fish Factory

When I heard about this episode of Dirty Jobs for Discovery Channel’s Alaska Week I just knew they were going to be genius and mesh Dirty Jobs with The Deadliest Catch…but NO!!! Discovery just doesn’t seem to “get” what their viewers want. I guess they figure that since Mike already narrates The Deadliest Catch, what more could we want, right?
Anyway, so this interesting, but not as exciting as I would have liked it to be, episode had Mike and the crew on a fishing boat that was out in the Bearing Sea.
Mike and the crew go about the fishing boat …read more

Yaay Smash Lab

So I know that I may have previously reported that I was angry that Smash Lab didn’t get its due respect for Alaska Week. But I’m happy to report that my spirits have been lifted. No, the Smash Lab guys didn’t get reinstated for Alaska Week, but I did find out they they do have their own VIDEO GAME. Its the 3rd most popular video game of the Discovery Channels website and I got the chance to play it today and its AWESOME. Its called Smash Test It!
If you’re interested in the game and are a big fan of Smash Lab …read more

No Smash Lab for Alaska Week???

No Smash Lab for Alaska Week???

So once again one of my favorite shows on Discovery Channels gets the shaft. Well not literally, but I’m a little bummed that Smash Lab didn’t get one single new episode for this whole Alaska Week thing that Discovery is kicking off starting April 20th.
I know the team at Smash Lab are no MythBusters by any means, but come on…there were so many things that they could’ve had the Smash Lab guys test out. They could’ve  had then do something with the glaciers, like flood proofing a house (with all the melting glaciers and all). Or how about that forest fire episode that aired …read more
