First Dog of the United States?
November 19, 2008 by Healthy Shana
In August, after the Obamas first said they were considering getting a dog, more than 42,000 Americans cast their vote in an American Kennel Club poll to suggest the right breed for the family.
The poodle was chosen from five hypoallergenic breeds. (Malia suffers from allergies. A Portuguese Water Dog also passes the allergy test.)
Claire McLean, founder of the Presidential Pet Museum, part of Presidents Park in Williamsburg, Va doesn’t think a poodle is a good choice.
“It’s one of the most popular breeds, yes, but it’s a snob dog. I don’t think it’s right for them.”
But Lisa Peterson of the Kennel …read more

April 29, 2008 by Healthy Shana
I thought this was something very cool that the guys over at How Stuff Works were doing on their website. They have an entire page and series of articles that go in conjuctin with Discovery Channel’s Alaska Week. They have a bunch of mini articles and links to things such as “how the Bermuda triangle works”, “how polar bears work” and even “how glaciers work”.
Gibson Guitars
April 25, 2008 by Healthy Shana
In the premier episode of, Some Assembly Required, which aired on January 8th, the hosts Brian Unger and Louis Bloomfield showed us how to make Gibson Guitars as well as how the bumble bee helps us to get those fabulous lipglosses that we so desired.
The first guitar was invented by Les Paul in 1941 but then he joined forces with Gibson in the early 1950’s, which is now the “go to” source for electric guitars. The Gibson factor us located in Nashville, TN.
At the factory they hand craft Les Paul guitars by the dozens using raw lumber. The wood that …read more
Global Warming and Skin Cancer
April 22, 2008 by Healthy Shana
May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month and scientists are saying that global warming can lead to high rates of skin cancer than ever before.
With this summer predicted to be the hottest yet. Research from two studies done in the United States has shown that skin cancer correlates strongly with an increase in temperature.
The findings also imply that a 2-4% increase in average summer temperatures could produce “substantial increases” in the numbers of new skin cancers.

Some Assembly Required
April 16, 2008 by Healthy Shana
This seems like a pretty cool show. Discovery’s Some Assembly Required premiered back in January but may not have gotten the press that it needed.
The premise of the show it that it teaches you how things are made, hence the name. The host Brain Unger and Louis Bloomfield visit the factory and showrooms where various products are made and take you to the in’s and out’s of this process.
This far only the premier episode has aired, but I will keep you posted when additional episodes air. In the premier episode the showed how electric guitars were made, Burts Bees Lip Balm …read more
I Can Make You Thin – TLC
March 21, 2008 by Healthy Shana
I Can Make You Thin premiered on TLCon March 16th. The premise of the show is that weight loss guru Paul McKenna can and will use his anti-diet approaches to help individuals lose weight. The series uses Paul’s “4 Golden Rules ” which are just simple techniques that viewers can use to control the relationship that their mind has with food.
It seems to be a very unique series and I will definitely be watching to see how normal everyday people will use his tips to lose weight. I am a little skeptical though. When I watched the premier episode it …read more
